Bypass crude oil sampler system with ISO 3171 CanWeigh system and low-pressure sample receivers
Bypass, or fast loop samplers, have been developed in response to demands for increased accuracy and reduced uncertainty and maintenance costs. A fast loop sampling system provides highly accurate sampling across a wide range of fluids and has a lower measurement uncertainty and higher accuracy than a probe sampler system.

Each system has a pumped 1" or 2" loop flowing in parallel with the main pipeline. The loop size is selected as part of the design process to maximize sample representivity and ensure sufficient velocity exists to maintain homogeneity of the fluids throughout the sampling system.

Fast loop systems can be designed for 8" to 52" pipeline and can be mounted into the pipeline through a seal housing allowing installation by 'hot tap' and removal under process conditions for pigging. The large Byscoop 'take-off' entry is mounted in the central third of the pipeline and the loop is designed to have no water traps. Flow can either be returned to the pipeline at the same point as extracted or at a suitable point downstream.  A full-bore cell sampler, Bypass sampler pump skid

flow indicator and isolation valves are mounted in the loop. The cell sampler isolates and discharges a 'grab' sample directly through the bottom of the sampler into a sample receiver.

The main components of the sampling system are mounted inside a receiver housing allowing them to be easily isolated and serviced without needing to shut down the main pipeline. The receiver housing can be heated if required and may contain multiple receivers with manual or automatic changeover. If compliance to ISO 3171, ASTM D 4177, is required the system is fitted with a CanWeigh receiver weighing system that continually measures the sampling system performance. Sample receivers can be removed to the laboratory where they can be re-mixed with a suitable mixing system prior to sample analysis. A signal from a suitable flow meter is used to flow-proportionally pace the sampling system.
